Inmate Beating Caught On Camera Inside Jail Elevator

A newly released video from the Miami-Dade Corrections Department is drawing attention, not just for what it shows, but for where it happened inside a closed elevator with no outside eyes.

The footage, made public on March 16, shows former officer Myth Louis-Jeune hitting an inmate, Spencer Butler, who was already in handcuffs. The incident took place on March 1, 2023, at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center.

The video shows the two men alone in an elevator when the officer begins to strike Butler several times. Because elevators are small and closed spaces, some observers say this raises concern about how actions inside such areas are monitored.

A day after the incident, Butler is heard saying, “I got my a** beat,” as he speaks to another officer.

More footage shows him later placed in a room with glass windows. An officer is seen pointing a weapon through the glass while others cough in the background. One voice says there is “no ventilation,” and another shouts, “Turn on the exhaust fan.”

Shortly after, Butler is taken to a shower. Officers tell him he had been pepper-sprayed, though it is not clear why the spray was used.

“I didn’t have to get sprayed,” Butler yelled.

In a separate clip, an officer asks Butler to write down what happened in the elevator. As he writes, Butler asks how to spell words like “aggressive” and “excessive.”

The case is now also raising questions about timing. Although the incident happened in 2023, charges against Louis-Jeune were not filed until January 30, 2026. He has been charged with misdemeanor battery and has pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer, Larry Handfield, said the officer acted to protect himself, calling Butler violent and uncooperative.

Prosecutors say the delay came after a request from the officer’s former lawyer, who wanted more time to review the case and prepare evidence.

Records also show the officer had been suspended before, after another use-of-force incident in November 2021.
