How Street Violence Took An 8-Year-Old’s Life

An ordinary evening of play turned into tragedy when 8-year-old Davian Nicholas was shot and killed outside his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Davian had spent part of his Sunday playing basketball with other children in the neighborhood. For many families on San Juan Drive, it was just another day of kids laughing and playing outside. But that peace did not last.

Around 6:20 p.m., gunfire broke out between two groups in the area, according to local authorities. Davian, who was nearby, was hit by a stray bullet. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors could not save him.

Children who were there said the moment still feels unreal. One boy said they had just finished playing when the shots rang out. “I hear like four or five shots. That’s when I came back outside, and we saw his mother in the grass,” a witness recalled.

Police moved quickly after the shooting. Within a day, four suspects were arrested. They include Jeremiah Tanan Scott, Jeremiah Walter, Everett Chambers, and Hunter Calligan. Investigators believe Scott fired the shot that killed Davian. Three of the suspects are facing first-degree murder charges, while the fourth is accused of helping in the crime.

Authorities say the shooting was linked to a dispute between two groups in the neighborhood. What started as a conflict between adults ended up costing a child his life.

People living nearby say the loss has shaken the whole community. One neighbor said the news was too painful to take. “When I received the news the baby had died, it brought tears to my eyes. I literally sat there and cried… They were just out here innocently having fun and playing basketball.”

Local leaders have also spoken out. The parish sheriff described the killing as “heartbreaking and senseless,” especially because it happened in a place where children are meant to feel safe.

A fundraiser has been set up to support the family with funeral costs and counseling.
