Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party, has hailed his recent visit to Nigeria as a significant learning opportunity in leadership and statesmanship. His remarks come after participating in events commemorating the 89th birthday of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Reflecting yesterday on his time spent in Nigeria, the former Energy Minister joined dignitaries and thought leaders at an international event titled “The Burden and Blessing of Leadership.” The event attracted voices from across Africa to delve into the complexities of leadership, deeply influenced by Obasanjo’s extensive career in military service, governance, and diplomacy.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh described the event as “a rare opportunity to reflect on decades of leadership, service, and statesmanship,” underscoring the importance of experience in shaping efficient governance across the continent. He noted that the perspectives shared during the sessions were both informative and inspiring for current and aspiring leaders.
In addition to formal participation, Napo emphasized a one-on-one meeting with Obasanjo and a guided tour of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, which serves as a major archive dedicated to the former Nigerian leader’s legacy.
As a gesture of goodwill, he offered Obasanjo with a traditional Ghanaian kente cloth, symbolizing cultural pride and the historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
Praising Obasanjo as the “Baba of Africa,” Opoku Prempeh acknowledged his significant contributions to continental development and leadership, highlighting the value of such figures as mentors and guides.
He concluded by reassuring his dedication to servant leadership, noting that the experience had reinforced his dedication to serving the Ghanaian people with humility.
This visit marks an ongoing effort to strengthen Ghana–Nigeria relations while promoting shared values of leadership, mentorship, and African unity.
