Ghana’s Ministry Of Trade Suspends Planned Increase In Sachet Water Prices

‎The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry in Ghana, has announced that the anticipated rise in sachet water prices will not be implemented as previously scheduled, following discussions with industry stakeholders.

‎In a press release issued today, the Ministry praised the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) for halting the proposed price hike.

‎“The Ministry assures consumers that sachet water prices will remain unchanged today. Buyers can continue to purchase sachet water at the existing rates,” the statement confirmed.

‎The decision comes after NASPAWAP’s earlier announcement regarding a potential price increase, attributing it to a global shortage of polymers and escalating production expenses linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Iran.

‎The association had suggested new pricing, which included GH¢8 at the ex-factory level and up to GH¢15 for retail sales.

‎However, the Ministry emphasized that the suspension reflects the government’s dedication to consumer protection and market stability.

‎To address the concerns raised by producers, the Ministry has arranged a meeting with the leadership of GPMA and NASPAWAP on Wednesday, April 8, aiming to find a sustainable solution to the challenges facing the sector.

‎“The Ministry remains committed to collaborating with all trade associations to swiftly resolve issues and ensure market stability,” the statement added.

‎The recent development provides temporary relief for consumers as discussions continue on how to balance production costs with the affordability of sachet water, an essential source of drinking water for many households across the nation.
