The Government of Ghana has officially conferred citizenship upon more than 100 individuals from the African diaspora, representing a significant milestone in the nation’s initiative to reconnect with people of African heritage worldwide.

‎The new citizens pledged their allegiance during a ceremony in Accra yesterday, which was part of Ghana’s larger effort to enhance historical, cultural, and economic connections with the diaspora.

‎During the event, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, emphasized that the ceremony signifies more than just the formal granting of citizenship but it represents a reconnection, healing, and the restoration of bonds between Ghana and the descendants of Africans who were displaced centuries ago.

‎She highlighted that, the government, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, is actively leading international initiatives at the United Nations to achieve recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as one of the most significant crimes against humanity.

‎”Embracing citizenship in Ghana entails actively engaging in the nation’s development and contributing to a future built on dignity, opportunity, and collective prosperity,” she added.

‎The Vice President stressed that the African diaspora significantly contributes to the continent’s development through remittances, investments, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.

‎She concluded by emphasizing Ghana’s enduring connection with the diaspora, which can be traced back to the vision of the nation’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and that, Ghana’s independence in 1957 was meant not only to benefit the country but also to promote freedom and opportunities for Africans and people of African descent around the globe.

‎Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the newly sworn-in citizens to fully embrace their new nationality with a sense of responsibility and dedication.
