Dad Dies Trying To Rescue His Two Stepdaughters From Drowning

Johnny Collins III, a 28-year-old African American man from Macon, Georgia, died trying to save his two stepdaughters from drowning in the Ocmulgee River at Amerson River Park. His family now remembers him as a hero.

On Tuesday night, Collins was at Amerson River Park with his family when 10-year-old Skyler Worthen and 7-year-old Summer McRae were swept into deeper water by strong currents. Collins jumped in to rescue them, but all three drowned

Rescue teams searched the river for hours as the family stayed close, hoping for a miracle. Their bodies were recovered later that night.

“I never would have thought that a river would be the reason my brother is no longer here,” Collin’s sister, Samantha Taylor, told 11 Alive.

His brother, Kenshaw Adkins, is still struggling to process the loss. He described Johnny as a well-known local DJ and a devoted father.

“He was a loving father to four children and a loving father figure to Summer and Skyler, embracing them as his own,” Adkins said. “I knew my brother could handle himself out there in that water. It’s just, and I didn’t look at it, like he basically gave his life to save two girls, and it says a lot about him.”

The family said they will continue honoring Collins’ life and legacy. They want him to be remembered for his bravery, heart, and love for his children.

They’re also asking local officials to improve safety measures at the park. Since 2020, at least 11 people have drowned at Amerson River Park.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said the park will reopen on Thursday.
