8-Year-Old Girl Saves Her Grandparents From House Fire In Mississippi

De’Meria Thomas, an 8-year-old African American girl from Greenville, Mississippi, quickly stopped a fire from spreading inside her grandparents’ home using a fire extinguisher. Her quick actions kept everyone safe until firefighters arrived.

On Friday, Greenville firefighters responded to a call about a house fire at a single-story brick home. When they reached the scene, they found only light smoke, and the family had already made it outside safely.

According to WLBT, investigators soon learned that Thomas had put out the fire herself. Her younger brother alerted her to the fire, and she grabbed the extinguisher. Thomas used the P.A.S.S. method she had been taught: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Her quick action kept the fire from destroying the home. No one in the family was hurt.

The Greenville Fire Department credited her quick response, courage, and fire safety knowledge for preventing the fire from causing more damage.

“Special thanks to Miss De’Meria for her brave and fierce act in saving her grandparents’ home,” the department said in a statement. “Greenville Firefighters are so proud of this young lady for protecting her family and home until professional firefighters arrived.”

As recognition for her bravery, the department invited De’Meria to join their Kids Academy program for free in June 2026.
