Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown, the founder and CEO of The Restful Sleep Place, the first sleep clinic owned by a Black woman that helps children from birth to 18 years old get better sleep through her virtual practice and unique methods. She sees patients in person and online in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California, and plans to offer her services across the country next year.

In the United States, 60% of children do not get enough sleep, which can cause behavior problems, learning delays, and frequent sickness. Dr. Afolabi-Brown, a sleep doctor with over 20 years of experience, wants to fix this problem, one family at a time.

“Sleep deprivation doesn’t just affect the individual; it impacts the entire family unit,” explains Dr. Afolabi-Brown. “When a child is sleep deprived, their physical, mental and emotional health suffers. Parents are often physically and mentally exhausted themselves. That is why our approach is family-centered. We address the root cause by looking at medical, psychosocial and behavioral components, from which we create customizable sleep treatments honoring the family’s values.”

Dr. Afolabi-Brown started RestfulSleepMD after facing her own sleep issues and their bad effects. Through her clinic, she offers personalized sleep coaching and care that is different from the short appointments at regular hospitals.

Because of her innovative methods, Dr. Afolabi-Brown is a popular speaker and sleep expert featured in places like The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, and Baby Center.

Jackie Williams from Los Angeles, a mom of two boys under 10, struggled with her children’s sleep for months. “I felt like I was in survival mode, all the days were blurred and I was completely exhausted all the time. We now have a solid routine and are getting the boys down

for 10-11 hours each night, which is unheard of! Working with Dr. Afolabi-Brown was a game changer for our entire family.”

Dr. Afolabi-Brown completed her Pediatric Pulmonology fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, followed by a Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

She has expertise in a range of pediatric sleep disorders including chronic insomnia, behavioral sleep issues, sleep disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and sleep issues in children with underlying conditions such as mental health disorders, autism, and ADHD.

She is on a mission to help parents and their children prioritize sleep to achieve their optimal health and live to their fullest potential.
