President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, is set to receive an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University in recognition of his distinguished leadership and advocacy for justice. The award ceremony will take place on March 26, 2026, during Mahama’s official visit to the university’s campus.
The university announced that the honor is awarded for Mahama’s contributions to public service, democracy, and his strong stance on reparations. “Lincoln University is deeply honored to welcome President John Dramani Mahama and to bestow upon him an honorary degree in recognition of his distinguished leadership,” stated Dr. Brenda A. Allen, president of Lincoln University.
President Mahama’s recognition comes at a significant time as he leads the African Union’s initiative for reparations. He is also expected to address the United Nations General Assembly, where he will propose the formal recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as one of the greatest crimes against humanity. This initiative is part of a broader campaign gaining attention across Africa and the diaspora.
The visit holds historical significance, as Lincoln University is the alma mater of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and a pivotal figure in Africa’s independence movement. The university remarked, “President Mahama’s presence at Lincoln affirms the powerful and historic connection between our institution and the Republic of Ghana.” Observers note that Mahama’s global advocacy aligns with Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision.
In addition to his international efforts, Mahama’s record during his presidency has contributed to this honor. His administration saw significant advancements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, as well as initiatives promoting gender inclusion, achieving gender balance at the basic school level.
This honorary doctorate adds to a series of international recognitions Mahama has received from various universities across Europe and Africa over the years.
