Ghana’s Embassy in the United States has voiced deep disappointment over Lincoln University’s last-minute decision to withdraw the honorary doctorate degree, honoris causa, that was to be awarded to President John Dramani Mahama.
The decision, conveyed only hours ahead of the scheduled visit on Thursday, March 26, is reportedly linked to concerns raised by a group within the university over President Mahama’s perceived stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely referred to as the anti-gay bill currently before Parliament.
In a statement, the Embassy noted that these issues were not raised during the university’s prior thorough investigations and vetting processes, inspite of considerable engagement between the Ghanaian mission and Lincoln University. Just last week, officials from both sides had finished a run through and finalized operational arrangements for the visit.
“It is both surprising and regrettable that such concerns have surfaced at this late stage, particularly with the President already in the United States in anticipation of the visit,” the Embassy stated.
The Embassy noted that President Mahama agreed to the visit in good faith after receiving a formal invitation from an institution with deep historical links to Ghana, including its connection to the nation’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.
While recognizing Lincoln University’s right to engage its internal stakeholders and uphold its core values, the Embassy raised concerns that the matters cited relate to ongoing legislative processes in Ghana, which are subject to democratic deliberation and do not represent the stance of any single individual.
President Mahama has been acknowledged for his leadership rooted in democratic ideals, respect for human rights, and a dedication to inclusive dialogue on complex national issues. The Embassy described the late emergence of these concerns as unfortunate, especially given the absence of prior consultation or opportunity for clarification.
The Embassy reiterated its dedication to constructive dialogue and mutual respect, hoping the longstanding Ghana-Lincoln University relationship will lead to a fair outcome.
