Sachet Water Producers Halt Planned Price Increase

Sachet water producers in Ghana yesterday, decided to keep prices unchanged following a crucial meeting with the Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

‎The decision comes in response to the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP), which had previously announced intentions to raise prices starting April 6, 2026. The proposed hike was attributed to escalating polymer costs and global supply chain disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

‎Initially, NASPAWAP had proposed new pricing of GH¢8 per bag for 500ml x 30 sachets at the factory level, GH¢10 for ex-truck sales, and a maximum retail price of GH¢15 per bag. This adjustment was anticipated to significantly affect small retailers and daily consumers.

‎In light of these developments, the Ministry organized a meeting yesterday with industry stakeholders to discuss the challenges and explore solutions to alleviate the burden on consumers.

‎At a press briefing following the discussions, Minister Ofosu-Adjare announced that the planned price increase would be put on hold, citing an improvement in economic conditions.

‎“In any economy, there are ups and downs. We have enjoyed favorable conditions for about 14 months, and I’m pleased that this will provide some relief over the next two months. We remain hopeful that circumstances will stabilize,” she stated.

‎Representatives from both the Plastic Manufacturers Association and NASPAWAP committed to working alongside the Ministry to ensure prices remain affordable while keeping an eye on production costs. The Minister highlighted that government intervention is part of broader initiatives aimed at stabilizing essential goods and shielding consumers from abrupt price increases.

‎The agreement offers significant relief to households nationwide, ensuring that sachet water, a daily essential for millions of Ghanaians, remains within reach despite rising operational expenses.
